At the time of the claim, when the loss is happening things can be a little chaotic. What you need to remember is you have three responsibilities as things are happening, or have just happened and you need to do them in the order that makes the most sense to keep yourself safe in the process. - Prevent further loss
- Salvage any items you can
- Photograph and videotape the damage as soon as you can to provide this as additional proof of loss.
- Do not throw anything away. Your insurance company has a right to see the items if you expect to be compensated.
Aside from the damage to your building, you will want to make a claim for all the personal items, and contents in your home that were damaged. This is probably the most daunting task for people in a loss.
Having a home inventory filled in, or photos and other records prepared in advance really helps.
It is not enough to just say you had things, you will need to document and itemize a list (within reason) to “make your claim”.
